How are the Protagonists of “Flight Plan “and “Kill Bill” constructed in order to represent them in a Post Feminine way?

In the past stereotypically women were perceived to be as “underneath” the men. For years and years women were always being seeming to be less important if you like than the men. However, nowadays this has all been changed. Some people believe that not only do women feel that they are equal to the men but also feel that they are much superior to them.

This philosophy of women being much more superior to men has been capitalized by movie directors and some TV dramas. During mid 2003 there was a movie distributed by 20th century fox called “Kill Bill”. I believe that this is a prime example of post – feminine film which is directed by the fantastic Quentin Tarantino. The other movie that I will be comparing it to is “Flight Plan” which is another post – feminine film which was directed by Robert Schwentlke.

Coming to a conclusion that Uma Thurman who stars in the movie “Kill Bill” and Jodie Foster who is in “Flight Plan” are both post – feminist characters their behavior in certain scenes in the movie are quite similar. Particularly when Jodie Foster is determined to retrieve her daughter back from the villain who is played by Peter Sarsgaard by fighting and using set of skills to do this. In contrast, Uma Thurman is taught a set of particular skills which she relies to fight off her enemies.

As far as the costume is concerned Jodie foster is appeared to be wearing dark clothing specifically long black jacket up to her knees this connotes that she does not wish to be seen or recognized. The use of dark colors in terms of what she is wearing shows that she is more independent and does not wish to rely on anybody else. Furthermore, the use of dark colors could connote that she is sad and vulnerable.

On the other hand, I believe that the mise- en - sene has a big role to play in, in terms of her representation. At the beginning of the movie it clearly shows us as the audience no other passengers or people around her when she is waiting for the tube other than her little daughter. This further adds to my point that she is overprotective as she is seen to be clenching on to her daughter even though there is nobody around.

Having analyzed the opening few minutes of the movie I feel that she is certainly vulnerable, anxious and almost wary of her surroundings. My personal view of her costume compared to Uma Thurman’s is that she is holding her cards back close to her chest if you like and not wanting to be more open whereas Uma Thurman is more strong-minded and much more resilient to do what it takes to get revenge on her enemies.
Alternatively, the costume that Uma Thurman is wearing particularly during the middle stages of the film where she is seen to be wearing skin tight jumpsuit which emphasizes her passion to learn these set of skills and her eager to get her own back on these villains.

At the same time I feel that this use of jumpsuit that she is wearing in “Kill Bill” highlights the sexiness about Uma Thurman. The fact that the jumpsuit is skin tight and having the top half zipper half done undoubtedly suggests that she is in control of her sexuality and also is receiving a lot of male gaze. Unlike, Jodie Foster in “Flight Plan” where she is consecutively wearing dull, unattractive and boring costume as well as the color which deteriorates the opposite of male gaze. Even though Jodie Foster is the protagonist she is not deemed to be sexually attractive whereas the employees of the aircraft are deemed more sexually attractive because of the use of costume as they are wearing uniforms.

Post – feminine is also witnessed in the movie “kill Bill” as she is protecting and defending herself from her enemies. By physically fighting back at the opposite sex suggests the post – feminine inside Uma Thurman. The physical fight scene shows us how brave and confident she is and also shows that just because she is a woman does not mean that she won’t be able to fight back at the opposite sex. This represents that women can stand up for themselves even if this involves any physical fighting. Furthermore, in “Flight Plan” Jodie foster also fights the opposite sex where this shows the bravery and prime examples of post – feminine scenarios.

Similarly, both movies also have the male dominance in there. As for “Kill Bill” when Uma Thurman is being taught all these skills by “the Master” of karate this suggest that women cannot do what the men can and would therefore have to be taught it over and over again until they get the gist of it. Also in “Flight Plan” Jodie Foster is kept under control by not only one male but two. The male actor in the movie that tell her what to do and one of them is the captain of the aircraft. During certain parts of the movie male dominance is witnessed by the target audience as Jodie Foster is being told what to do repeatedly and then later on in the movie she discovers that she needs to get her daughter back and feels that enough is enough and fights anyone that comes in her way.

How are the Protagonists of “Flight Plan “and “Kill Bill” constructed in order to represent them in a Post Feminine way?

Hitman Poster Analysis

The following text that i will be analysing is called “Hitman” the game poster.
In this poster the main priority is the dead women lying on a bed with a bullet womb in her forehead. The connotation of this text is that even though she is dead she is still implying the story of the actual game. In addition, the denotation would be that the poster is illustrating to the target audience a female who has potentially been shot as she has blood dripping from her forehead.

As far as the mise- en -scene is concerned it also creates an atmosphere of love and passion as you can identify the dead female on a red covered bed.
This clearly suggests that the mise- en-scene is setting different thoughts in the audiences mind as the female is half dressed like a whore as well as having the shot womb on her forehead. The core ideologies the typical assumptions made by the audience would be that it creates an ideology of sexuality as the female is not wearing full clothing. Another ideology would be that there is some sort of love when someone sees this poster.

Moreover, the institution has an impact on the text as it is a games console is largely dominated institution and is well known for their games. Play station is the institution and is well known across the world for its powerful status.

T.I. Ft. Justin Timberlake - Dead And Gone Official Full Music Video

At the very begining of this music video it clearly starts with a written message to its target audience which can draw the attention of many. This is quickly followed by a close up of the sky with cable wires clearly visible, this might connote that the setting of this music video is in a secluded area which combines well with the lyrics of the song. I believe that the setting chosen has a real emphasis on the lyrics of the song which gives it a bit more spark and delight.

As far as the propps theory is concerned this music video does not contain any of the characteristics required from the average music video. Throughout the entire music video there are two main people who are T.I and Justin Timberlake in which they sing the song. In this video I would say that they are both the hero hence the lyrics that they are singing. Another theory that takes place in this music video is Binary opposistion. This music video undoubtedly shows the light shift from light to dark within a couple of seconds which might highlight the sadness of the song when it is on the dark and then there might be some sort of hope when the bright light comes crashing through.

During the video there are scenes where some people in the Uk can relate to in terms of the cheap and broken down council flats. This part of the music video might have been encountered in order to entice the lower working class and somehow be related to them. There are also scenes in the music video that show drug dealers which can be united with the everyday life that we currently life in at the moment.

Bullet Boy Analysis

Narrative: The narrative of the movie bullet boy is basically about a man who is recently off parole attempting to straighten out his life with a lot negative results happening to him. While on his way home from prison with his friend Wisdom a wing mirror is hit off of another gangster’s car by Wisdom who refuses to pay for it. Ricky played by Ashley Walters hides a gun in his room which his little brother Curtis finds.

As far as the propps theory is concerned in this movie Ashley Walters is seen to be as the hero as he is trying to get his life back on track. In addition, his lover/ girlfriend would then be the princess which leaves Ashley’s Walters mum the donor in which she tries to help him with his life. This also leaves the Ashley’s Walters friend to be the helper and obviously the villain would be the police as they try to come down on him like a tonne of bricks if he steps out of line.
Setting:

Setting:The setting of this film can quickly be established by the target audience because of the rundown council estate houses. This setting shows us that the characters and the way that they live their lives can reflect on their homes and the way that they are living. Because of the setting of this movie is predominately near council houses this illustrates that the working class that can relate to this sort of settings is D/E. Stereotypically, the use of propps can be again understood from the low working class as they might understand where the characters are coming from take it on board.

Characters: The characters in this trailer are perceived to be stressed, hassled and frustrated most of the time. The protagonist Ashley Walters is shown in this trailer and the movie is based upon him and in which he tries his upmost to fight against anyone and anything that gets in his way. Another key character in this movie would be the child who is seen to be in precession of a fire arm which tends to catch the targets audiences eye because of his age.

Iconography: The iconography that I chose is the council estates buildings shown in the trailer in the first few seconds of the trailer in which not only the working class can relate to but also the target audience that also might live in council estate houses.

Analysis Of American Pie

American Pie is a 1999 teen comedy film directed by Paul Weitz. The film was a box office hit and spawned two direct sequels having produced American pie 2 in 2001 and then American wedding in 2003. American pie predominately concentrates on four boys who make a pact to lose their virginity before their high school graduation.
The title of the film refers to a scene in the film in which the lead character is caught masturbating with a pie after previously being told that third base feels “like apple pie”. I conducted a short piece of research and it has come to my attention that the film ranked 49th on Bravo’s “100 funniest Movies” list and ranked 22nd on Entertainment Weekly’s list of the 50 best high school movies.
This movie targets its target audience from late teens which is from 18 onwards. I believe that this would be the perfect target audience that the director has chosen to target as this movie contains some strong language and the majority of it being about sex. As far as the representation is concerned stereotypically female teenagers are found to be has the centre of attention in every point that the male teenagers tend to discuss about.

Uses of gratification are applied in this movie as the director has used virgin and whore in order to raise enigma codes for the target audience. By using Levi’s Strauss’s theory binary opposition I believe that the director has attracted a wider range of the target audience as this involves a large amount of suspense.

To explore how film trailers are used to attract an audience.

1) In the movie trailer of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix the target audience emphasises many different types of techniques that the director may have used to entice the target audience. For instance, in the first couple of seconds of the movie trailer you can identify binary opposition. This is a method in which many directors tend to use in order to entice a wider range of the audience. At the start of the trailer where the Warner Bros logo is being advertised there is a glimmer of light behind the logo however at the same time there are dark clouds predominantly behind the Warner Bros logo.

2) Furthermore, the way that the genre of the movie is established by the target audience is mainly by the setting and the type of sound and props used in the movie itself. As you can classify in the movie trailer the mise-en-scene of the trailer sets the entire movie to be action packed as well as adventure. Because the mise-en-scene of the movie trailer varies from one place to another, this could leave the target audience wanting to watch the movie more. Not only does the mise-en-scene highlight the type of genre the movie is but also the sound and the different type of editing used. I believe that the director (David Yates) used various different types of sound to set the passion and the anxiety for the audience to take upon. The use of quick pace cut between different scenes illustrates the genre of the movie immediately.

3) I believe that the target audience of harry potter and the order of the phoenix varies from about 16-20. The reason as to why I think that this age group would combine well with the movie itself is because clothing and appearance as well as the genre of the film will attract that particular age group.

4) The way that the trailer shows that his film is worth coming to see is the different types of techniques that David Yates uses to create the intensity of the movie. First of all the director uses several of fades and cuts to set out the scene for the target audience. I believe that the quality of the trailer is the most crucial in order for the trailer to draw as much attention as it can so it can be a success. Because Harry potter and the order of the phoenix has to many sequels this shows exactly how successful the movie is.

5)The way in which the director made sure that the potential audience can understand the film even if they haven’t seen the first one is through the core characters voice over through the trailer. In addition, the narrative is understandable and sets up this film for further action that the target audience can hopefully enjoy. As this is just one of the successful sequels the director has produced the narrative is very clear and presented this very well. The director also adds a touch of class when he inputs a romance scene in Harry Potter which I believe hasn’t been accomplished before.
